A series of tests that validated the PAC virtualization concept over IP/MPLS WAN

Over the past few decades, power utilities have embraced electronic systems that enable the digitalization grid protection automation and control (PAC) systems and power substations. The growing ranks of intelligent electronic devices (IEDs) make PAC functions faster and easier to manage. But many IEDs rely on complex wiring and use different types of devices and vendor implementations.

This paper explains how the adoption of IEC 61850 standards will help utilities virtualize substations and bring greater interoperability, automation and scalability to the PAC environment. It also describes a series of tests that confirmed that virtualizing PAC functions across an IP/MPLS wide area network (WAN) can enable utilities to reduce cost and simplify their operations.
