Webinar: Communications for grid control and protection – now and next

Power utilities face new challenges and risks with their grid control and protection systems as generation evolves at the transmission and distribution levels. Sign up for this on-demand webinar to learn how utilities are addressing these challenges by using their IP/MPLS WANs to support existing and new approaches to control and protection.

Topics Covered
  • Research into power grid control and protection challenges and risks, with a focus on the Great Britain power system and projects to address future needs

  • Lessons learned in supporting critical utility communications on IP/MPLS, including use of QoS, network synchronization and security

  • Teleprotection over IP/MPLS service structures and settings to optimize performance and current differential protection over Ethernet pilots

  • IP/MPLS as a foundation for future network expansion and services

Campbell Booth, PhD
Professor and Head of Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering
University of Strathclyde

Professor Campbell Booth is presently the Head of the Electronic and Electrical Engineering Department at the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland. This is one of the largest EEE departments in Europe, with 70 academics, 100+ research staff, 200+ PhD students and a taught student population of in excess of 1,000. He is a member of the IET and has worked on organising various conferences, including Chairing the IET International Conference on Developments in Power System Protection in 2018.

Clint Struth, MSc, Png
Principal, Telecom and Engineering
SCI Networks Inc.

Clint Struth is a Principal of SCI Networks and engineering consultant focusing on the deployment of next-generation utility telecom networks that include the implementation of a converged architecture and migration to IP/MPLS technology. SCI Networks is headquartered in Calgary, Canada and operates in Canada, USA, and internationally. He is a principal utility telecom engineer, responsible for engineering high-availability, mission-critical networks for delivery of Teleprotection, SCADA, Voice/LMR and data services via packet-based networks (IP/MPLS). Clint is a pioneer in the deployment of high-voltage teleprotection using MPLS and pseudo-wire transport.
