New spectrum for a new generation

Radio spectrum is a scarce resource and increasing use of 5G can only ramp up the pressure. High-end video, augmented reality and machine applications will ramp up the pressure on operators to create dramatically more capacity.

How can the demands be met?

One promising answer lies in using mmWave frequency spectrum in the range of around 30 GHz to 100 GHz. This brings many advantages:

  • Much more bandwidth than the current sub 6 GHz spectrum
  • More suitable for small cell deployments
  • Can be deployed in urban micro, suburban micro and indoor hotspots

This revolutionary new technology has already been shown to work, achieving startling speeds of up to 50 Gb/s at short range. The next step is commercial deployment, with first trials of 5G use cases in early 2017. mmWave will help achieve the promise of 5G and the many new applications and use cases it will enable.
